According to news briefing on agriculture from Daily Trust Nigeria, Former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday criticized the management of the Federal University of Agriculture in Makurdi over what he described as abysmal performance and inability to live up to its expectations.
He made his feelings known yesterday in Makurdi when he led members of the Zero Hunger Forum on a field visit to the institution, saying that with what he has seen, it means the university has failed in its primary objective.
Chief Obasanjo, who spoke in Makurdi noted that the school was not doing enough research to make use of latest discoveries in agriculture.
The Former President expressed disappointment with the management of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi for operating an obsolete farm plantation that does not match modern trends.
He said it was better for the institution to replace their palm trees with the improved variety and used the obsolete ones to brew palm wine for sale to boost the income of the institution.
He said that the lecturers do not need to embark on strike as a result of nonpayment of allowance, stressing that it was uncalled for and since their salaries were paid up-to-date, they ought not to have embarked on strike no matter the circumstances.
The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom urged the management of the institutions farm to uproot the old palm trees and replace them with improved variety to enable them improve on their income.
