- JAC partly shuts down Federal university of agriculture, Makurdi.
- ASUU concludes meeting and awaits response from national office to proceed on strike
the Joint Action Committee JAC, comprising of NASU(non-academic staff union), NAT(National association of technologist), SSANU(Senior Staff Association of Nigerian universities) and other affiliated union inFederal University of agriculture Makurdi proceeded around 12noon on Wednesday 17/08/2016 on an indefinite industrial action(strike) to press on their demand which include
-reduction in salaries
-allowances not being paid
-the absence of promotion for due staffs
-under equipment of laboratories
and much more.
Our source has it that some Lecturers have confessed that their salaries are paid in percentages ranging from 80-92.7% of the original salary.
A trusted source said the percentage issue came up when the school council stopped the V.C Prof. Kucha from deducting taxes which are never remitted to state government from the staff's salaries.
Further inquiries review that university staffs are the least paid amongst the federal universities and one of the schools where staffs pay the highest amount of tax. The investigation has it that every month, there is an excess of N75m which is rumoured to be allowances not paid.
In a related development, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU in FUAM awaits a response to proceed on strike.
the body had a meeting at the same time with JAC with a call to the V.C Prof. Kucha to explain certain transactions and issues bordering from members welfare to the general academic wellbeing of the school.
ASUU hereby threatens to join soonest JAC on strike if the V.C fails to comply with their pressing demands.
Here are some students responses:
"this school have really delayed me in becoming what I should be. this is my final year and I would say we have so far been moving like snail."
Another said, "this is really a bad idea. My mates in other schools have gone to the second semester while I'm still here." a year one lamented.
While almost all are not happy, some take it as an opportunity to prepare well for exams if ASUU decides to go on strike.
